Nurses rally for safe staffing at San Francisco’s public hospitals

Hospital workers from both SF General and Laguna Honda with SEIU1021 took to the front steps of the city’s only level 1 trauma center on Tuesday, April 4, to demand safer working conditions for all.

Nurses are often short staffed and find themselves traumatized while outnumbered. Some have to defend themselves from attacks by unruly patients while doing their best to provide care.

No contract, no peace! Let's keep the pressure on!

Wow–we did that! SEIU 1021 San Francisco City and County members turned out in force January 17 at City Hall and again last Friday, February 16, at SF General Hospital. We were over 500 members strong Friday–and DPH heard us loud and clear.

We were united and our message was powerful: To provide the quality public services SF residents and visitors need, the City MUST fill its vacant positions and STOP wasteful contracting out.

Takeaways are still on the table. That means we have to keep the pressure on.

Last Friday, February 16, over 500 San Francisco city workers represented by SEIU 1021, IFPTE Local 21, and other unions rallied outside of San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center to shed light on the dangerous impacts of understaffing. Members pointed out that DPH's current approach to staffing is dangerous and not cost-effective

Tuesday, February 6, SEIU 1021 members who work for the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) attended the monthly Health Commission meeting as DPH Chief Financial Officer Jenny Louie presented a budget proposal for fiscal years 24-25 and 25-26. An Invaluable San Francisco Institution Is Saved, Thanks to Hard Work and Partnership
Statement from SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford on Laguna Honda Hospital’s Approval for Medi-Cal Recertification

Today is an exciting day for SEIU 1021 members at Laguna Honda Hospital: After over a year of hard work, Laguna Honda has been approved for recertification by the Medi-Cal program, which over 95% of our patients rely on. This victory cannot be overstated. It not only means that Laguna Honda’s doors will remain open, that our medically fragile patients will not be shipped elsewhere to their detriment, and that our members will keep their jobs.

We fought and we won a temporary suspension of patient transfers at Laguna Honda

The situation regarding Laguna Honda Hospital’s certification status with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been stressful for us all—patients, staff, and community members alike. After notice had been given that CMS was going to be terminating their Medicare and Medicaid funding, the hospital was required to begin transferring patients. If the hospital failed to begin those transfers right away, they were told their funding would be cut off immediately.

We’re going to fight like hell to save Laguna Honda Hospital

Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), who provide the vast majority of our funding, have conducted site visits and an investigation into a number of on-site infractions. As a result, the hospital is required to implement a Closure and Patient Transfer and Relocation Plan while we all continue to work towards recertification.
