When Tragedy Strikes, SEIU 1021 Members Must Stick Together
A Message from SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford
Dear SEIU 1021 Member:
Last week a difficult week for Alameda Health System, as two
workers there passed away: Maria Tran, a psychiatric nurse
at John George, and Dr. Jing Mai, a physician resident intern at
Highland. These untimely deaths are terribly sad, and while we
may never fully understand why tragedies like these occur, we
know the effects will be felt in our workplaces and in our
communities for a long time.
We Won Additional Compensation for Designated Shifts!
The Omicron surge is hitting us all hard. To improve patient care, address short staffing issues, and enhance safety, we negotiated with AHS management to create a new differential for certain shifts. This new differential will increase staffing, allow adequate staffing for acuity peaks and high-census times, and avoid using external agencies for staffing.
Notice of Member Convention Delegate Election

Let’s make some noise and show the community that we are there for them and we won’t rest until we’ve forced Alameda Health System’s CEO and Board of Trustees to do what the Alameda County Board of Supervisors have told them to do: give us a fair contract and put public health in public hands.
Caravan route:
ALERT! Car Caravan Route for Friday, October 9, at 2 p.m.!
We have had to cancel the barbeque, unfortunately.
Today’s planned 2 p.m. march at AHS headquarters is being changed to a car caravan. Please assemble at the Alameda Labor Council: 7750 Pardee Lane, Oakland, to prepare for the caravan.

AHS Management’s Proposed Takeaways and Unfair Labor Practices
In our last bargaining session, last Tuesday the 15th, the General Unit was joined by observers from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, Oakland City Council, and ACCE Action, a community group we often partner with.
At that session, AHS proposed a brand new takeaway to gut Appendix F in the GU contract. Appendix F provides career ladders for many classifications. AHS’ proposal would mean trapping new hires at the I level of their classification, and not letting them advance to II and get the corresponding raise.
Honk for Safety!
On Thursday, June 11 4 p.m., Meet at 100 Oak St. and Caravan to Highland Hospital
Join your elected Bargaining Team members, your Contract Action Team members, and your co-workers for a rally and car caravan to demand fair bargaining, proper coronavirus testing, and public accountability across AHS.

Environmental Services workers at Alameda Health System fight back against layoffs—and win.
When Alameda Health System began notifying people of layoffs, workers knew how damaging it would be for patient care across the County’s hospitals and health services—and they began organizing to take action at the upcoming Board of Trustees meeting.
Flanked by over 30 coworkers and supporters in scrubs and purple union shirts, EVS worker Donn DesBoine told the AHS Board of Trustees at their September meeting, “Sometimes there’s one housekeeper to a floor…If the layoffs happen, there’s no care for infection control…[and] the patients are going to be affected.”
