The events were honored with the presence of local elected officials and influential labor leaders. As SEIU 1021 members came together, the unity events became not only a celebration but a powerful reaffirmation of collective strength and shared goals within the Napa and Solano communities.

Regional Center of the East Bay members get creative to win a great contract

At the Regional Center of the East Bay, more than 300 SEIU 1021 members work to advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. In their recent contract campaign, these members showed their spirit and solidarity and won what their bargaining team called “the best contract RCEB has ever seen.”

Two words summarize 2023 best: worker power.

In the Midwest, 150,000 auto workers went on strike for several months, leading to historic contract gains and inspiring non-union autoworkers to organize. In the South, the labor movement has found new life as service workers across multiple industries have united with the Union of Southern Service Workers to raise the South’s minimum wage. Across the nation, more than 9,000 Starbucks employees have unionized at more than 380 Starbucks stores.

Coat & toy drive brightens the holidays for thousands of local kids in need
The partnership with Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and other unions met its goal for this year’s toy drive to double donations and the number of children served.

Spirits were high today at the Oakland SEIU 1021 union hall – a.k.a. “Santa’s Workshop” – as dozens of volunteers and staff greeted hundreds of families in need with hot cocoa, cookies, hot lunch, and gifts galore. Intermittent rain throughout the day could not dampen the holiday cheer as kids’ eyes lit up at the array of toys.

500 more coats needed for the SEIU 1021, SEIU 2015 & Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao’s 2023 Toy and Coat Drive

Next Tuesday, December 19, SEIU 1021, SEIU 2015 and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao will be giving away literally thousands of coats and toys to local kids who might otherwise not have much under the tree this year.

But we’ve got a problem: More families than expected have signed up for the giveaway, and we need more coats. We are still 500 coats short. We need your help to make sure local kids stay warm this winter!

Thursday, December 7, SEIU 1021 and Jobs With Justice SF came together to host an online teach-in titled “Labor for Peace in Palestine.” This teach-in occurred almost exactly a month after the SEIU 1021 Executive Board issued a statement endorsing the “Ceasefire Now” movement — a statement calling for all armed conflict to cease in Israel and Palestine.

While festive, this event was not only a party, but a vibrant testament to the strength and solidarity of our union.

2023 East Bay Unity Party Recap

The East Bay Unity event held at the Oakland Airport Hilton last Friday was a night to remember for SEIU 1021 members and their guests. The evening was filled with laughter, joy, and unity as members won prizes from a raffle before they hit the dance floor. SEIU 1021 members enjoyed a delightful dinner and delicious drinks and posed for memorable snapshots at the photo booth. Members brought brand-new, unwrapped toys and coats to donate to children in need.
