SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when 10 local unions came together in northern California to form one larger, more powerful union. Together our members are building a true 21st century union fighting to empower and improve the lives of our members. We are 54,000 strong—organizing and representing public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private non-profits, special districts, public health care, and nursing. LOCATION: Northern California 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Director of Organizing and Strategic Campaigns and Organizing Coordinator(s) the Lead Organizer implements the organizing and campaign plan of the Local Union. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: directing organizing staff and member organizers on campaigns; providing input to the Organizing Director and Organizing Coordinator(s) in the evaluation of organizing staff; evaluating potential organizing targets; initiating direct contact with organized workers; developing leadership and structure of campaigns; and overseeing the conduct of organizing drives and representation elections. This is not a 9 to 5 job – long and varied hours, with early morning, evening, weekend work and travel, including overnight stays. 

SKILLS, APTITUDE AND COMMITMENT: 

  •  A lead organizer should have run and won a campaign from beginning to end. 
  •  Ability to manage the work of up to 5 staff organizers. 
  •  Ability to build a team, to communicate clearly and persuasively verbally and in writing. 
  •  An understanding of the labor movement and a commitment to improving conditions for working people is essential. 

EXPERIENCE: Must have at least two (2) years of experience in organizing and leading staff. 

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$50,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use. 

Ability to speak Spanish or other language spoken by large groups of workers is highly valued. 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The current salary range is $72,433.15 to $118,968.57 based on qualifications and experience. There is a competitive and comprehensive benefits package.
