California Values Act Signed into Law

Post

Last week California became a “sanctuary” state, when community groups, labor unions, and human rights activists successfully pushed Gov. Brown into signing SB 54 into law.

“The sanctuary state legislation would protect public service workers from being forced to turn in their clients to immigration services,” said Alysabeth Alexander, SEIU Vice President of Politics.

While the passage of SB 54 doesn’t stop ICE, it will limit immigration enforcement actions at our schools, hospitals and courthouses—places where all Californians should feel safe, regardless of immigration status. It ensures that no state or local public safety resources are diverted to fund the federal government’s attempts to carry out mass deportations or separate families.

On October 16th, we are phoning voters across the country to tell Congress to stand up for immigrant youth by passing the DREAM Act. We want to provide a clear path to citizenship, without adding anti-immigrant policies like detention camps, armed agents, or a border wall.
