The triennial SEIU Local 1021 Convention, held Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, was a dynamic celebration of solidarity and collective action. It marked a pivotal moment for hundreds of enthusiastic members.

An energizing kickoff, featuring a purple and gold-clad choir and a spirited drum line, set the stage for two unforgettable days filled with connection, learning, and empowerment.

Hundreds of member delegates came together to rekindle friendships and forge new connections, embodying the spirit of unity that defines SEIU 1021. The energy in the room was palpable as members shared experiences and strategies to uplift their coworkers and communities.

Throughout the weekend, attendees had the opportunity to dive into 15 engaging workshops, covering a diverse array of topics from climate justice to designed to inform and inspire. From leadership skills to grassroots organizing, each session was a treasure trove of knowledge, equipping members with practical tools to drive change in their workplaces and beyond.

“It was powerful to get to connect with other labor leaders who are realistic and honest about the climate crisis we’re facing,” said Nat Kramm, one of SEIU 1021’s newest members from the Cal Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, who is currently on the bargaining team for their first contract and spoke from the stage on the core plan priority Organizing Unions for All.

“We spoke a lot about what it’s going take in the next 10-15 years to get organized, but also what we need to do right now to protect workers as we face increasing rates of extreme temperatures and weather events like Hurricane Helene and how the war machine is expediting this crisis.”

The convention also featured an impressive lineup of influential speakers who motivated attendees with inspiring messages. California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond shared his personal story to illustrate how building a solid base of quality education was a key to empowering workers and their communities. Community organizer and SEIU 1021-endorsed candidate for California’s 12th Congressional district Lateefah Simon spoke to the power of fighting for racial justice and standing up to injustices.

Saturday night’s entertainment was a highlight. The all-female Mariachi Bonitas brought joy and energy to the stage, while Ballet Folklorico de Woodland dazzled with colorful performances that celebrated cultural heritage. The Dahlias Circus Troupe dazzled the crowd with their acrobatic feats, and the soulful but energetic music of Fantastic Negrito closed out the festivities.

But the heart of the convention was the democratic process, as hundreds of elected delegates voted on the core plan—an essential set of priorities that will guide SEIU 1021’s efforts over the next three years. A voice vote on the core plan passed with an overwhelming chorus of “Aye” and without a single “nay.”

This plan has evolved through thoughtful discussions and input from delegates across the union, reflecting a shared vision for turning dreams into wins for working people. By setting clear priorities, planning strategically, and organizing effectively, SEIU 1021 is poised to make a significant impact in the coming years.

“This was my first convention, so it was all a highlight for me. I didn’t realize how big it would be until I walked in. I’m on the bargaining team for my chapter, and I learned a lot of things from the workshops I attended. Overall, it was a great learning experience and a good time!” said Sacramento City Unified Schools bargaining team member Kemberle Petty.

Members left with new skills, renewed motivation, and a strong sense of purpose as the convention wrapped up. Yet, even after a long weekend of learning, SEIU 1021 members and delegates still weren’t done.

Alameda Health Systems worker and executive board member Derrick Boutte shared his thoughts on the event: “This convention was powerful. Our solidarity brought us together to think together, to dream together, and to make decisions together. We were able to celebrate our wins and plan for our shared futures. Our collective commitment to making things better for ourselves and our communities allowed us to grasp the roots of what the labor movement can be. In the years to come, SEIU 1021 members will show what we can do when we stick together!”

After the convention ended Sunday afternoon, SEIU 1021 members and staff showed up in the spirit of true union solidarity to support UNITE HERE Local 49’s bold action to demand better treatment and pay for workers, picketing and marching on their boss outside the Sheraton Grand.

Here’s to the next chapter of progress and solidarity—together, we can and will make a difference!
