We will keep fighting.
Statement on 2024 Election
Dear union siblings,
Like so many of you, I watched yesterday’s election results come in with deep disappointment. We looked forward to turning a page on one of the most divisive chapters in this country’s recent history. We worked hard to make that happen. While we knew all along that this outcome was very possible, perhaps even probable, we were determined to prevent it.
This morning, I am more determined than ever to stay in this fight and see it through. Our communities need and deserve nothing less.
I’m very proud of all the hours our members and staff put into this election, from knocking on doors for Vice President Harris in Nevada to phone banking for mayoral and supervisor elections right here at home. While election results are still coming in, we had many local victories last night and I know we will have many more in the days to come.
We will continue to stand strong and united against racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and all other forms of hate and intolerance. We will continue to fight back against attacks on working people and on the public services we provide that keep our communities healthy, safe, and vibrant. We will keep fighting for women’s rights to make decisions about our own bodies. We will keep fighting to protect and improve our democracy and ensure our rights.
No victory is permanent; neither is defeat. Every gain we’ve made we’ve had to fight to protect. They have tried to silence us before, but they cannot take away our voice. We’ve fought before, and we will keep fighting. I am proud to be in this struggle with all of you. Together, we are powerful. Together, we are unstoppable.
In solidarity,
Theresa Rutherford
SEIU 1021 President
