Strong leaders build strong unions!
Alta California Regional Center chapter swears in 17 new stewards
When union members step into leadership roles, good things happen! Recently, chapter members of Alta California Regional Center, an organization that provides services and support to individuals with disabilities across Northern California, put worker power into action. On March 22, during their general membership meeting, the chapter swore in 17 members as stewards.
Strong leadership is crucial to building a robust union on all levels. And with so many members at Alta in steward roles now, their fellow members will be even better represented.
“It is important for the membership to take leadership roles in the union to ensure our workforce is supported and unified. We are fortunate to have dedicated individuals on our bargaining team that work hard for a fair contract that encourages retention of our valued employees as well as attracting recruits to join the ACRC team,” said Interim Chapter President DeLayna Eskridge-Brown.
With Alta Regional Center locations spread out across Northern California, the distance between service areas presents a unique challenge to union representatives who may not be familiar with the ins and outs of the daily operations and the needs and concerns of members in different parts of the region. However, when member leaders who understand these details can bring them to the table, all members’ needs can be more deeply understood and addressed.
Akbar Bibb, North Central VP of SEIU 1021, reiterated this message, emphasizing, “It’s the way of the union. By raising each other up, the needs of the members’ chapter are also raised up. It’s the essence of what we’re all about.”
We look forward to seeing Alta California Regional Center’s new union leaders step into these critical leadership roles and lead the way for future leaders!
