Strength in AAPI Heritage & Power in Unity event brings community together in celebration
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao joined members and their families to honor and uplift AAPI culture
On Saturday, June 1, SEIU 1021 members and their families came together for our annual AAPI heritage celebration. The event showcased mesmerizing lion dancers, Korean Samulnori folk dancers, and Chinese fan dancers, as well as heartfelt speeches from union and community leaders and a variety of delicious AAPI cuisine.
The celebration honored the richness and diversity of AAPI heritage and reaffirmed the need for collective action in building power within our community and beyond.
The speeches delivered by AAPI community leaders, including powerful words from Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, SEIU 1021 member leader Tina Diep, Supervisor Lena Tem’s senior policy advisor Serena Chen, and SEIU AAPI Caucus President Susan Li, left a lasting impact. Their calls for advocacy, representation, and social justice were not rhetoric but a rallying cry for intentional solidarity.
As members danced, laughed, ate, and shared stories, it became evident that our strength lies in our diversity and ability to come together as one voice.
As a union, we are committed to amplifying AAPI voices and creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all communities.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated members and staff who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Your presence, support, and enthusiasm were instrumental in making this celebration a true reflection of our vibrant community.
Let’s continue to build bridges, break barriers, and pave the way for a brighter future for future generations.
Together, we are not only stronger but unstoppable!
And, of course, an extra special thank you to Yeon Park for organizing this beautiful event!
