Senate Committee Listens to Tenants, Moves Crucial Housing Justice Legislation Forward

Article

Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Bruce Boyer, a member of SEIU Local 1021 and Campus Monitor at Will C. Wood Middle School in Sacramento, after the Senate Judiciary Committee passed AB 1482 by Assembly member David Chiu (D-San Francisco).  The legislation would protect working families struggling to keep their homes by preventing landlords from rent gouging and requiring landlords to have just cause to evict tenants.

“With one in three hard-working Californians struggling month after month to pay their rent, SEIU members have to stand up for what is right and make our voices heard. That’s why I joined my fellow union members and community advocates in support of AB 1482 by Assembly member Chiu today. Workers – brown, Black, white and Asian alike – can’t pursue our California Dreams when our landlords can raise the rent by 100% on a whim and evict us without notice. Working Californians across the state applaud the Senate Judiciary Committee for supporting this crucial bill that will provide stability and the opportunity to invest in our future.”
