SEIU 1021 members at Sacramento City Unified Schools celebrate nearly unanimous ‘yes’ vote to ratify new contract

Article

On Tuesday, November 19, SEIU 1021 Sacramento City Unified School District members voted overwhelmingly to ratify their new ‘23-’25 tentative agreement. The bargaining team had been in negotiations since May.

They won this strong new contract thanks to members’ solidarity and commitment to show up and speak up at meetings and the bargaining team’s hard work negotiating for over six months.

“I want to thank our bargaining team for their long hours and dedication to our SCUSD chapter members,” said Debra Durazo, SCUSD chapter secretary. ”Our bargaining team is an equitable representation of our coworkers across the district, including nutrition staff, custodial and maintenance staff, yard duty, instructional aids, warehouse staff, transportation staff, school site clerical staff, technology staff, district office clerical staff, and program specialists. We worked hard and refused to back down because we all agreed that members deserve a fair and equitable contract to increase wages and support recruitment and retention. And we were successful!”

The last step in finalizing the agreement will be for the Board of Supervisors to approve it on December 19.

“With this new contract, we secured a fair salary schedule, increased speaking time at board meetings to amplify our voices, improved job security with longer notice for layoffs, and shortened probation periods to help our members establish stability sooner,” said Karla Faucett, SCUSD chapter president. ”This is a victory for fairness, transparency, and respect for the important work we do every day.”

Contract highlights include:

  • 2% wage increase retroactive to July 1, 2023, for all salary schedules
  • 4% wage increase retroactive to July 1, 2024, for all salary schedules
  • Squaring of Salary Schedule C retroactive to July 1, 2024
  • Increased speaking time for 1021 leadership at Board Meetings
  • Expanded transfer language
  • A shortening of probation periods to match state law
  • Clarification of the grievance process
  • Increased notice for proposed layoffs
  • Input on the contracting out of any bargaining unit work
