Friday, January 12, more than 200 SEIU 1021 members attended a unity party in Sacramento, hosted by SEIU 1021 Regional Vice President Akbar Bibb.

Union members danced, enjoyed catered food, took pictures at a photo booth, and celebrated all the achievements they won through solidarity and union strength. Throughout the night, Akbar Bibb held periodic raffle giveaways of snacks, drinks, gift cards, and electronics.

SEIU 1021 members were joined by local politicians Councilmember Katie Valenzuela; Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) Board of Education members Jasjit Singh, Chinua Rhodes, and Taylor Kayatta; and Sacramento mayoral candidate Dr. Flojaune “Flo” Cofer.

Akbar Bibb reflected, “I was so impressed with the turnout to our unity party. We were able to bring together all the chapters in the region. We’ve accomplished so much, and we’ve got so much to look forward to. I look forward to continuing to build our power, to re-electing Councilmember Valenzuela, and to electing Dr. Flo Cofer as our next Sacramento mayor.”

School board member Rhodes congratulated SEIU 1021 members at Sacramento City Schools for winning a contract with raises and a one-time bonus. Councilmember Valenzuela reflected that it’s people-powered organizations like SEIU 1021 that keep her inspired and that push our communities forward.
