Mariachi Bonitas to grace the SEIU 1021 Convention stage
The 2024 SEIU 1021 Convention, taking place September 28 and 29 in Sacramento, will feature a variety of entertainment. The union is pleased to announce that the all-female group, Mariachi Bonitas, will be gracing the stage.
The musicians have quickly gained popularity throughout California, especially in the Sacramento area, since forming in 2020 under the direction of Dinorah Kingler, who plays guitar.
Kingler is known for this twist to a historically male-dominated art form. She first formed an all-female mariachi band while living in Los Angeles in the 90s. They were called the Mariachi Las Alondras, and they found success performing with stars such as Stevie Wonder, Sheila E, Patty LaBelle, and Celia Cruz.
Kingler passed the baton to Cindy Shea as director, and under the new name Mariachi Divas, the group became multi-Grammy® Award winners.
“I’m really proud of her,” said Kingler, “because she really worked it, the way it should be. She’s a very smart person, a business savvy woman, and with talent, you have everything in one package.”
Founding member Sandra Arias-Ortiz was born in San Francisco and raised in Stockton. She developed a deep passion for the violin from a young age and played with the UC Davis Symphony while studying there.
Sayra Fernandez, Ellie Aquino, Gaby Negrete Martinez, Rosalia Cardona Flores, Teresyta Monjo, Jordan Kennell, and Norma Torres complete the band.
