City of Oakland Ransomware Attack: What You Need to Know

Article

Dear SEIU 1021 City of Oakland Member:

As you may know, the City of Oakland has been the victim of a ransomware attack. Ransomware attacks like this can make an organization’s computer system vulnerable, “allow[ing] hackers to steal sensitive information, block access to the network, and demand payment to restore access and return the files.”

The City has declared a state of emergency to address the problem

Here’s what you need to know:

To ensure the safety and privacy of our members, SEIU Local 1021 is meeting actively with the City on this issue, along with the other unions. At this point, much is not known, and the City is working to investigate, understand, and resolve the issue. As they know more, they will communicate with us and directly with you. For now, the steps you should take are:

  • Keep an accurate record of the hours you work,
  • Stay in contact with your supervisor about this record

This pay period, you will be paid the same as you received last pay period. This will result in some people being underpaid and others being overpaid for this period, and the City understands that there will be a reconciliation period later. The time frame for this reconciliation period has not been determined yet. If you have any questions, reach out to your SPOC or your union representative.

This is a serious situation and both the City and your union are working to resolve it as quickly and safely as possible. We will share more information as it becomes available.
