Biden-Harris administration cancels $74 billion in student loan debt for public service workers
The Biden-Harris administration announced last week it had approved an additional $4.5 billion in student loan relief for more than 60,000 student loan borrowers working in public service—including educators, nurses, social workers, armed service members, and first responders.
Those new approvals marked a major milestone: $74 billion in student loan debt has been cancelled for 1 million public service workers.
This has been an huge help with debt relief for countless SEIU members through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) these past three years under the current administration.
By contrast, only 7,000 public service workers under the Trump administration ever benefitted from the PSLF due to denials — even though 99% of those who applied were eligible.
If elected, Trump’s Project 2025 plan would eliminate the PSLF program altogether. That would harm communities across the country, including 306,000 public service workers right here in California who would be robbed of more than $21 billion in additional student loan debt relief.
