Asian Health Services workers march for fair wages and quality care
On August 11, 2023, Asian Health Services (AHS) staff united in a march from their main Chinatown clinic to AHS headquarters. Chants of “Shame on You!” echoing through the streets, AHS workers conveyed their frustration over stalled contract negotiations for fair wages and benefits.
Dr. Star Yang, a doctor at AHS, highlighted the teamwork that drives their mission. “AHS staff are my community. Work wouldn’t be as fun without them, and I actually cannot do my job without them! We are a team, and we need all members to function well.”
Behind the scenes, AHS boasts a staggering $83 million in reserves, with a notable $20 million allocated for buildings. AHS workers are appealing for a different kind of investment: in their own dedicated staff.
With an urgent call for secure staffing to ensure top-notch care, AHS workers are gearing up for a crucial strike vote beginning this Thursday, August 17, and running through next Monday, August 21. The vote count will take place at 5:30 pm on August 21 at the SEIU 1021 Oak Street office.
Together, they’re raising their voices for quality care and fairness, paving the way for positive change.
