Are you a new and aspiring member leader? Level up with our Internship for Leader Development
Applications for the sixth cohort are open--deadline to apply is Oct. 20!
SEIU Local 1021’s Internship for Leader Development Program is entering its sixth cohort and is looking for energetic and motivated members who are committed to working for social and racial justice and who believe in the value of work, the democratic process, and the importance of public services. This program will train and mobilize members who want to unleash their leadership potential.
“This internship has pushed me to grow as a member leader by being able to speak to members and non-union employees more confidently and persuasively. Speaking to people has always been difficult for me, and I appreciate how leaders at SEIU have pushed me to speak up and share my stories,” said Jessica Orantes, a medical assistant at Alameda Health System’s Highland Hospital.
The goal of our internship program is to:
- Create a key path to develop and increase member leadership;
- Provide training and firsthand learning opportunities in leadership development, mobilization, and organizing skills; and
- Gain a new perspective on our union’s purpose and values.
“This experience has built my confidence in being able to engage members and non-members around the importance of being active or being part of a union. I would definitely recommend other members to apply for the internship, because the hands-on experience in the program is invaluable. The best parts are knowledge of one-on-one organizing, working as a team, training, and feedback,” said Martina Bakilana, a behavioral health clinician for Alameda County Health Care Services.
If this sounds interesting, and you share these values and want to have an active role in your union, this internship is for you.
The Member Internship Program application deadline is October 20, 2022. The internship runs from January 9 - March 31, 2023.
